Higgins model 583.1 16 Gauge Bolt Action Shotgun. I am trying to find out when these guns were made. There will be no serial number on this model. THis was one of the BA1 design series. Hi all, i have a J C Higgins 22lr. This was my fathers rifle, and growing up we were not allowed to touch it when he was not there. Well, I was not always able to follow his rules and was caught shooting the birds in the back yard (late '60's suburbs of Chicago, might have been next door neighbor). Took a few pounds of flesh from my 'hide', and he threw away the bolt! Forty plus years later dad has passed on and I still have that rifle (can you say pack rat?).
I would like to find a bolt for it, and not sure about if Numrich # system is by model. And if it is they are sold out?
Any other places to check? I know I will be throwing good money at something that has little value except it is first rifle ever handled by me. Memories value is only reason why.

Higgins Model 20 - 12 Gauge Shotgun - Originally sold by Sears From 1908 until 1962, sold a wide variety of sporting goods and recreational equipment, including, and under the brand name ' J. These products were well made and were popular with the company's historical core of rural and working-class consumers. Like many other Sears products, the Sears firearms were originally made by major firearm manufacturers. The Model 20 was produced by, as was the Model 88 revolver. Higgins brand for Sears sporting goods was replaced with the brand. Many of the more durable J.C. Higgins products are still available as second hand items.
The brand name, J. Higgins, was based on a real person, John Higgins who was a Sears employee. He moved from his birth country of Ireland to the United States in his late teens and began working for Sears in 1898. He spent his entire working career with Sears and was Vice President for the company for a period of time. He was actually born with no middle name but the Sears Co. Presented the idea of labeling their sporting good line with his name and saw it more presentable labeling the brand as J.C. He worked with the company until his retirement as head bookkeeper in 1930.
